Sanur Hotels — Where To Stay in Bali

Bali's relaxed east-coast beach town, with sunrise views and a long boardwalk.

Best Hotels in Sanur

Sanur runs along Bali's south-east coast and is the island's calmest mainstream beach base. A reef sits offshore, which flattens the water and creates the shallow, protected swimming that families and older travellers come here for, and a five-kilometre paved beachfront path links the hotels, warungs and cafés end to end.

Accommodation is a mix of long-established beachfront resorts with mature gardens, mid-range hotels one street back on Jalan Danau Tamblingan, and a growing set of boutique properties and villas. Sanur was Bali's first resort town and it still feels more settled and less nightlife-driven than the west coast.

Where To Stay in Sanur

Sanur is essentially a long strip: the beach and its path on one side, Jalan Danau Tamblingan running parallel behind it. Beachfront resorts give you direct access to the sand, sunrise over the water and usually the best gardens and pools. Hotels on the inland side of the road are meaningfully cheaper and still only a two to five minute walk to the beach path.

North Sanur is quieter and closer to the Sanur harbour terminal for fast boats to Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida. Central Sanur has the densest run of restaurants and shops. South Sanur, near Mertasari beach, is the quietest and best for a slow beach stay with a kite-flying, wide-lawn feel.

Because Sanur faces east, sunrise is the event here, not sunset. If early light on flat water matters to you, book beachfront.

Best Areas to Stay in Sanur

North Sanur
Around the harbour and Sindhu area. Best for early fast-boat departures to the Nusa islands, with a local market and a quieter stretch of beach path.
Central Sanur
The Jalan Danau Tamblingan strip, with the most restaurants, cafés and shops, and the classic mid-size beachfront resorts. The most walkable part of Sanur.
Mertasari and South Sanur
Wide lawns, a calm swimming beach and a relaxed, mostly resort-and-villa area. Best for families who want quiet and space.
Inland Sanur (Jalan Bypass side)
Value hotels and guesthouses a short walk from the beach, close to supermarkets, clinics and the road to Ubud and the airport.

Hotels in Sanur by Budget

Budget

Sanur's budget tier is guesthouses and small hotels on the inland side of Jalan Danau Tamblingan or off the bypass, usually with a pool and breakfast and a five to ten minute walk to the beach. Long-stay rates are common because Sanur attracts repeat visitors who stay for weeks.

Mid-range

The largest group: three and four-star hotels and garden resorts, many with direct beach access, plus private-pool villas in the lanes. This tier is where Sanur is strongest against the west coast on value, particularly for beachfront rooms.

Luxury

Larger beachfront resorts with extensive gardens, multiple pools, spas and kids' facilities, plus a handful of boutique beachfront villas. Ask whether the beachfront is sand or seawall at your section — it varies along the strip and affects swimming at low tide.

Best Sanur Hotels for Couples, Families & More

Families
The reef-protected water, shallow entry and flat beach path make Sanur one of the two most family-friendly bases in Bali alongside Nusa Dua, and it is cheaper and less enclosed than Nusa Dua.
Older and repeat travellers
Flat footpaths, a calm sea, established restaurants, good clinics and no late-night club scene make Sanur the default for travellers who have done the south and want to relax.
Island hoppers
If Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan or the Gili Islands are part of your trip, staying in north Sanur puts you minutes from the fast-boat terminal for an early departure.
Couples
Sanur suits couples who want quiet dinners, sunrise swims and spa time rather than beach clubs. Book beachfront in south Sanur for the calmest stretch.

Things To Do Near Sanur Hotels

Sanur life happens on the beach path: sunrise walks, cycling the full five kilometres, stand-up paddleboarding on the flat morning water, kitesurfing off Mertasari in the dry season, and long lunches at the beachfront warungs. Le Mayeur Museum and the Sindhu morning market are both walkable from central hotels.

The harbour makes Sanur the best base for the Nusa islands — Penida's viewpoints, Lembongan's snorkelling and manta trips all depart from here. Ubud is around an hour inland, and the east-coast temples are an easy day trip. See things to do in Bali for tours with Sanur pick-up.

Getting to Sanur From Bali Airport

Sanur is about 15 to 18 kilometres from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), usually 30 to 50 minutes by car via the Ngurah Rai bypass. It is one of the more predictable airport runs in Bali because it avoids the Seminyak and Canggu bottlenecks.

A pre-booked private transfer is the easiest arrival, particularly if you have an early fast boat to the Nusa islands the next morning.

The Mandara toll road over the bay speeds up the trip when you are heading to south Sanur, and drivers will usually take it unless traffic on the bypass is clear.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sanur Hotels

Is Sanur good for swimming?
Yes. An offshore reef keeps the water flat and shallow, which makes Sanur one of the safest swimming beaches in south Bali. At low tide the water can be very shallow, so check tide times if you want to swim properly rather than paddle.
Is Sanur boring compared to Seminyak?
It is quieter by design. Sanur has plenty of restaurants, cafés and beach bars but little clubbing. Travellers who want nightlife usually base in Seminyak or Canggu; travellers who want calm water and early nights choose Sanur.
Is Sanur the best place to stay for Nusa Penida trips?
Yes. Fast boats to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan leave from Sanur harbour, so staying in north or central Sanur means a short walk or a five-minute ride to an early departure.
How far is Sanur from the airport?
Around 15 to 18 kilometres, typically 30 to 50 minutes by car via the bypass or the Mandara toll road.
Is Sanur suitable for older travellers?
It is one of the best areas in Bali for it — flat pavements, a long beachfront path, calm water, established restaurants and easy access to medical facilities in Denpasar.
Do Sanur hotels have sunset views?
No, Sanur faces east, so it gets sunrise over the sea rather than sunset. For sunset dinners on the water, travellers usually take a trip across to Jimbaran or the west coast.
