Snorkelling in Bali

Boat and shore snorkelling on Bali's calmer, clearer eastern and north-western reefs, including drift sites and manta ray encounters.

Blue Lagoon at Padang Bai, Menjangan Island in the north-west of the island, Amed on the east coast, and the Nusa Penida sites for manta rays.

Visibility is generally best in the dry season, roughly April to October. Sites near Nusa Penida have real currents and are guided for a reason; reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest beat repeated sunscreen top-ups.

Planning snorkelling in Bali

  • Dry-season mornings (April to October) give the clearest water. Afternoon wind chop is the usual reason a trip disappoints.
  • Boat trips to Nusa Penida's manta sites are guided because of genuine current. If you are a nervous swimmer, Blue Lagoon at Padang Bai or Amed is the better first outing.
  • Most operators supply mask, snorkel and fins, but a rash vest and reef-safe sunscreen are on you. Bring a dry bag for phones on the open boats.
