Uluwatu Hotels — Where To Stay in Bali
Dramatic limestone cliffs, world-class surf and clifftop sunset venues.
Best Hotels in Uluwatu
Uluwatu covers the southern tip of the Bukit peninsula, where limestone cliffs drop into the Indian Ocean above a string of small white-sand beaches. Accommodation here is dramatic rather than convenient: clifftop resorts with ocean-facing infinity pools, design villas among the scrub, and simple surf lodges above breaks like Bingin, Padang Padang and Impossibles.
The area is spread out. There is no single walkable centre — Pecatu, Bingin, Ungasan and Uluwatu itself are separate pockets linked by one main road, and almost everyone relies on a scooter, a car or hotel transport.
Uluwatu is at its best for couples wanting views and privacy, and for surfers who want to be within riding distance of world-class reef breaks.

Where To Stay in Uluwatu
Choose between clifftop and beach-access. Clifftop properties in Ungasan and Pecatu give you the famous views and sunsets, but reaching the sand means steep stairs, a cliff lift or a short drive. Stays above Bingin, Padang Padang or Balangan put you within a walk of a beach, usually down a long flight of steps.
Villas dominate the mid-market, and the top end is a small group of internationally known clifftop resorts. Surf-focused guesthouses and hostels cluster around Bingin and Padang Padang.
Check what dining is nearby before booking. Many Uluwatu villas are isolated, and if the property has no restaurant you will be ordering a car for every meal.

Best Areas to Stay in Uluwatu
- Bingin and Impossibles
- Cliff-edge warungs and surf lodges above one of Bali's best-loved beaches. Best for surfers and travellers happy with stairs and a rustic feel.
- Padang Padang and Labuan Sait
- The busiest pocket, with the main road's cafés and shops, a famous small beach and a wide spread of villas and mid-range hotels.
- Ungasan and Karang Boma
- Clifftop luxury with the biggest ocean views and the most secluded resorts, above Melasti and Karma beaches. Very car-dependent.
- Pecatu and Balangan
- Inland estates, golf and a long sandy beach with warungs. A practical middle ground for families and longer stays.
Hotels in Uluwatu by Budget
Budget
Budget in Uluwatu means surf hostels and simple guesthouses near Bingin and Padang Padang, often with fans, cold-water bathrooms and a shared terrace with an ocean view. Rooms are simple; the location and the view are what you are paying for.
Mid-range
Private-pool villas set back from the cliffs and boutique hotels along Labuan Sait, usually with a scooter park, a small restaurant and a pool. Confirm how far it is to a beach path — 'ocean view' and 'beach access' are very different things here.
Luxury
Uluwatu's headline product: clifftop resorts and large private villas with infinity pools facing the Indian Ocean, spa pavilions and often a cliff lift or buggy to a private beach. This is Bali's most scenic luxury and among its most expensive.
Best Uluwatu Hotels for Couples, Families & More
- Couples and honeymooners
- Sunset from a clifftop pool is the reason most couples come here. Privacy is high and the area is quiet at night, which suits a slow, view-driven stay.
- Surfers
- Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Impossibles, Bingin and Balangan sit within a few kilometres of each other. Stay near your preferred break and check the tide charts; most spots are reef and best at particular tides.
- Groups
- Large multi-bedroom clifftop villas are common and can be surprisingly good value split between couples, with a chef and driver often included.
- Families
- Possible, but check the terrain — many properties have steep stairs, unfenced cliff edges and no safe swimming beach. Families wanting flat water usually prefer Nusa Dua or Sanur.
Things To Do Near Uluwatu Hotels
Uluwatu Temple at sunset with the kecak fire dance is the area's signature outing, and it is a 10 to 20 minute drive from most Uluwatu hotels. The beaches — Padang Padang, Bingin, Balangan, Melasti, Nyang Nyang and Suluban under the cliffs — each need a walk down and back up.
Beyond the beaches there are clifftop day clubs, surf lessons for beginners at Balangan on the right tide, and seafood dinners down at Jimbaran Bay 20 minutes north. See things to do in Bali for surf lessons and Uluwatu sunset tours that include Bukit hotel pick-up.

Getting to Uluwatu From Bali Airport
Uluwatu is about 20 to 25 kilometres from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), typically 40 minutes to an hour and a quarter depending on where on the Bukit you are staying and traffic through Jimbaran.
A pre-booked private transfer is strongly recommended here. Ride-hailing coverage on the Bukit is patchy, some villa access roads are unsealed, and drivers who do not know the area struggle with the unmarked lanes off the main road.
Give your driver the beach name as well as the address, and expect the last stretch to be slow if you are staying above Bingin or Impossibles.

Frequently Asked Questions About Uluwatu Hotels
- Is Uluwatu a good base if I do not surf?
- Yes, for the views, the clifftop pools, the temple and the beaches, but you will need transport for almost everything. Travellers who want to walk to restaurants and shops are generally happier in Seminyak or Sanur.
- Can you walk to the beach from Uluwatu hotels?
- Sometimes, but almost always down steep stairs cut into the cliff. Clifftop resorts in Ungasan use lifts or buggies; villas further inland need a drive to any beach.
- Which Uluwatu beach is best for swimming?
- Melasti and Balangan have the easiest access and the most swimmable water at the right tide. Most Bukit beaches sit over reef, so tides matter and swimming conditions change through the day.
- How far is Uluwatu from the airport?
- Roughly 20 to 25 kilometres, generally 40 to 75 minutes by car. A pre-booked transfer is the practical option because ride-hailing on the Bukit can be unreliable.
- Do I need a scooter or car in Uluwatu?
- Effectively yes. The area is spread across several kilometres with no walkable centre, so plan on a scooter, a hired car with driver, or a hotel with its own shuttle and restaurant.
- Is Uluwatu more expensive than other parts of Bali?
- The clifftop luxury tier is the most expensive in Bali, but the area also has genuinely cheap surf guesthouses near Bingin and Padang Padang. The mid-market is thinner than in Seminyak or Canggu.
