Staying In Sanur

Sanur runs along Bali's south-east coast, about 30 to 40 minutes from the airport. It faces east, so mornings begin with sunrise over the water rather than sunset over it, and a reef sits offshore keeping the shallows flat and swimmable. A paved beachfront path stretches for several kilometres past warungs, cafes and hotel gardens, and it is the most pleasant stretch of coast in south Bali to walk or cycle.

Stays here are a mix of long-established mid-range beach hotels, low-rise garden resorts, and a growing number of smaller boutique properties and guesthouses set back along Jalan Danau Tamblingan. Buildings are low by local regulation, so you get gardens and courtyards rather than towers. Nightly rates tend to be gentler than Seminyak or Nusa Dua for a comparable standard.

Who Sanur Suits

Sanur suits families with young children, older travellers, repeat visitors and anyone who values calm water and an easy pace over nightlife. It is also the practical base for the Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan fast boats, which leave from here, and a reasonable launch point for east Bali day trips. It is not the place for surf, beach clubs or a late-night scene.

Things to weigh up: the beach is narrow at high tide in places, the reef means the swimming area is shallow, and getting to Canggu or Uluwatu means a long drive across the south. In exchange you get a walkable, low-stress base with plenty of independent restaurants at moderate prices.
