Canggu Hotels — Where To Stay in Bali

Surf breaks, rice-field cafés and a young, creative beach-town energy.

Best Hotels in Canggu

Canggu stretches along the black-sand coast north-west of Seminyak and has grown from a handful of surf losmen into Bali's busiest café, co-working and beach-club district. Accommodation is dominated by private-pool villas and small design hotels rather than big resorts, which is why the area suits longer stays, surfers and travellers who want a base instead of a package.

The important thing to understand before booking is that Canggu is not one place. Berawa, Batu Bolong, Pererenan and Echo Beach each have their own beach, main street and character, and moving between them at peak hour on Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong can take far longer than the distance suggests.

Where To Stay in Canggu

Pick your street before you pick your hotel. If you want to walk to the beach, cafés and a beach club, book within a few hundred metres of Batu Bolong or Berawa's main road. If you want quiet, rice-field views and a slower pace, look at Pererenan or the lanes inland from Echo Beach and plan on riding a scooter or ordering a car for dinner.

Villas outnumber hotels here, and many are managed remotely with a WhatsApp contact rather than a front desk. That is fine for confident travellers but worth knowing on a first trip. Hotels in Canggu are typically small — 20 to 60 rooms, a pool, a café and a shuttle to the beach.

Traffic is the single biggest factor in how much you enjoy Canggu. A villa 1.5 kilometres inland is cheap for a reason: the shortcut lanes are narrow, one-way in places, and slow in the late afternoon.

Best Areas to Stay in Canggu

Batu Bolong
The centre of gravity — the beach, the surf break, Old Man's, and the densest run of cafés. Best for walkability and first-time Canggu stays, and the busiest for traffic.
Berawa
The most developed and family-friendly pocket, closest to Seminyak, with wide roads, larger villas, big beach clubs and shopping. Handy if you want Canggu's scene with easier access to the south.
Pererenan
Quieter, greener and increasingly the choice for longer stays, with rice-field villas, calmer streets and a less crowded beach. A short ride to Batu Bolong.
Echo Beach and Nelayan
Surf-focused and lower key, with a reef break, sunset warungs and a mix of budget rooms and mid-range villas.

Hotels in Canggu by Budget

Budget

Budget accommodation in Canggu means surf hostels with private rooms, homestays and simple guesthouses, usually inland from the beach with a shared pool and a scooter park. Long-stay monthly rates are common and often far better value than nightly rates, which is why so many remote workers base here.

Mid-range

The bulk of Canggu inventory: one and two-bedroom private-pool villas and boutique hotels with a café and small gym. Check whether the villa has air-conditioning in every bedroom, insect screens and a reliable internet connection if you plan to work.

Luxury

The top end is design-driven rather than corporate — clifftop-style villas over the rice fields, adults-focused boutique hotels and large multi-bedroom villas with staff, mostly in Berawa and Pererenan. Full-service five-star beach resorts are more a Nusa Dua and Jimbaran product than a Canggu one.

Best Canggu Hotels for Couples, Families & More

Surfers
Batu Bolong is the friendliest learner and longboard break, Echo Beach and Pererenan are more advanced reef and beach breaks. Staying within walking distance of your break saves a lot of scooter time with a board.
Long-stay travellers and remote workers
Monthly villa rates, co-working spaces and a deep café scene make Canggu Bali's default long-stay base. Confirm the internet speed in writing before booking.
Couples
Private-pool villas in Pererenan give you seclusion at a lower price than Seminyak, with sunset dinners at Echo Beach a short ride away.
Families
Berawa is the practical family choice — wider streets, larger villas, kids-friendly beach clubs and a supermarket. Note the beach is black sand with surf, so it is not a paddling beach for toddlers.

Things To Do Near Canggu Hotels

Canggu days revolve around a morning surf or beach walk, a long café breakfast, an afternoon in a pool or spa, and sunset at a beach club or the warungs on Echo Beach. Surf lessons, board hire, yoga studios and scooter rental are all available within a short walk of any Canggu hotel.

Getting to Canggu From Bali Airport

Canggu is around 20 to 25 kilometres from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). Budget 45 minutes to an hour and a half by car; the last few kilometres inside Canggu are often slower than the highway section.

The Kuta bypass and Sunset Road route is the standard way in. Arriving after dark with luggage, a pre-booked private transfer is worth it because many Canggu villas are down unlit lanes that are hard to find.

Tell your driver the nearest café or landmark as well as the address — Canggu addresses are notoriously imprecise and pins are frequently wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions About Canggu Hotels

Which part of Canggu should I stay in?
Batu Bolong for walkable cafés and the main surf beach, Berawa for families and easier access to Seminyak, Pererenan for quiet rice-field villas, Echo Beach for surf on a budget. All are within a few kilometres of each other but traffic makes them feel further apart.
Do I need a scooter to stay in Canggu?
Not if you book within walking distance of Batu Bolong or Berawa's main strip. Anywhere further inland you will want a scooter or will rely on ride-hailing cars, which can be slow in the afternoon.
Is Canggu good for families?
Berawa works well for families thanks to larger villas, beach clubs with pools and a supermarket. The beaches are black sand with surf and rips, so young children should swim in the villa or hotel pool rather than the sea.
How far is Canggu from Bali airport?
About 20 to 25 kilometres and typically 45 to 90 minutes by car depending on traffic and exactly where in Canggu you are staying.
Are villas or hotels better value in Canggu?
Villas are the dominant product and usually better value for two or more people, especially for stays over a week or on monthly rates. Hotels are simpler for short stays because breakfast, reception and daily service are included.
Is Canggu quieter than Seminyak?
Not any more in Batu Bolong and Berawa, which are busy day and night. Pererenan and the lanes north of Echo Beach are genuinely quieter while still being a short ride from the cafés.
