What To Expect On Arrival
After immigration and baggage collection at Ngurah Rai International Airport, you'll walk through a busy arrivals hall where drivers wait behind a barrier. A pre-booked transfer means someone is holding a board with your name, so you skip the taxi queue and the negotiation entirely.
Travel time to Ubud is typically 75-120 minutes, though Bali traffic is unpredictable — allow extra time in the late afternoon, and expect a slower run on Friday and Sunday evenings.
The Drive To Ubud
This is the longest of the common airport routes. Drivers take the bypass through Denpasar and then head north via Sukawati and Batubulan, passing the stone-carving and art villages along the way. There is no motorway — it is town driving almost the whole distance.
Central Ubud around the Palace and Monkey Forest Road is congested and partly one-way. Accommodation in Penestanan, Sayan or the Tegallalang direction adds another 15 to 30 minutes on top of the standard quote.
Ubud Transfer Tips
- Ask about a stop at Tegenungan Waterfall or a rice-terrace viewpoint — many drivers include one on request.
- Ubud is noticeably cooler and wetter than the coast; a light layer is worth having in your carry-on.
- Traffic through Sukawati is worst on market mornings and around ceremony days.
