Things to do in Bali

Surfing in Bali

Lessons and guided surf sessions on Bali's beach and reef breaks, from first-time whitewater lessons to guided trips for experienced surfers.

Kuta and Legian have the forgiving beach breaks used for lessons; Canggu, Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula hold the reef breaks better suited to intermediate and advanced surfers.

The west coast is most consistent in the dry season (April to October); the east coast works better from November to March. Reef breaks are not beginner territory — book a lesson on sand first.

Planning surfing in Bali

  • Beginners should start on the sand at Kuta, Legian or Batu Bolong. The reef breaks at Uluwatu and Padang Padang break over shallow coral and are not a first lesson.
  • Lessons typically run two hours including board and rash vest, with the calmest conditions in the early morning before the onshore wind arrives.
  • For experienced surfers, the west coast fires from April to October and the east coast (Nusa Dua, Keramas, Sanur) takes over from November to March.
