Bali Immigration & Visas

Entry rules for Indonesia are set by the Indonesian government and can change at short notice. Use this as an orientation, then confirm the current requirements before you book.

Immigration rules change. Always verify current requirements with official Indonesian immigration and customs sources, and with your own government's travel advisory, before you travel.

Passport Requirements

Indonesia generally requires a passport with at least six months' validity remaining from your date of arrival, blank pages for stamps, and evidence of onward or return travel. Airlines check these at check-in, so a passport that's close to expiry can stop a trip before it starts.

Visa On Arrival And e-VOA

Many nationalities, including Australian passport holders, are eligible for a tourist Visa on Arrival. It can typically be obtained on landing at Denpasar, or applied for online in advance as an electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VOA).

Applying online before departure usually means you skip the payment queue and go straight to the immigration gates — worth it when several flights land at once. Eligibility lists, fees and processing details are set by Indonesian immigration and should be checked at the time you apply.

Length Of Stay And Extensions

A tourist Visa on Arrival is issued for a limited stay and, in most cases, can be extended once for a further period while you're in Indonesia. Extensions are handled through immigration and, depending on the current process, may require an in-person appointment. Start the process well before your permitted stay expires — overstaying attracts a daily fine.

Longer stays, remote work, study or business activity usually require a different visa class arranged in advance.

Immigration Procedures On Arrival

Arriving passengers clear immigration, collect bags and pass a customs screening. Indonesia has moved much of the customs declaration process online, and some formalities are completed by QR code before landing. Our airport and arrivals guide walks through what the terminal experience is actually like.

Bali Tourist Levy

The provincial government of Bali applies a tourist levy to foreign visitors, payable per person and separate from any visa fee. It can generally be paid online before travel or on arrival, and you may be asked to show proof of payment. Check the current amount and official payment channel before you travel — pay only through official government channels.

Departure Requirements

On departure you'll pass through immigration again, where your stay is checked against your permitted period. International departure tax is normally included in the airfare. Allow plenty of time at the airport during the evening departure peak.
