Why Travel Insurance Matters For Bali
Bali is an easy holiday, but it is still overseas travel. Treatment at an international standard hospital is paid privately, and a medical evacuation home is expensive. Insurance is also what protects the money you've already spent if illness, weather or a cancelled flight disrupts the trip.
What Travel Insurance Can Cover
Medical expenses
Hospital admission, treatment, ambulance and, where required, repatriation. This is usually the most important section of any policy for Bali.
Trip cancellation and disruption
Non-refundable flights, accommodation and tours if you have to cancel or cut a trip short for a covered reason, plus additional costs from significant delays.
Lost or delayed baggage
Replacement of essentials during a delay, and cover for lost, stolen or damaged luggage and personal items, usually with per-item limits.
Activities and adventure cover
Surfing, snorkelling, diving, rafting, ATV rides and volcano treks are common in Bali and are treated differently by different policies. If you plan to book activities, check they're listed as covered.
Motorcycles And Scooters
Scooter accidents are one of the most common causes of serious injury for visitors to Bali. Many policies only cover riding if you hold a valid motorcycle licence recognised in Indonesia, wear a helmet, and stay within engine-size limits. Riding without meeting those conditions can void a claim entirely. If you'd rather not ride, a private driver or transfer is a simple alternative.
What To Check Before You Buy
- Medical and evacuation limits, and whether Indonesia is included in the region
- Pre-existing medical conditions, and whether they must be declared
- Excess amounts per claim
- Adventure activity lists and any excluded sports
- Motorcycle and scooter conditions, including licence requirements
- Alcohol-related exclusions
- Cover for valuables, phones, cameras and surfboards
- Cancellation limits and what counts as a covered reason
- Whether cover starts at purchase, which protects pre-paid bookings early
