Bali's dry season, April to October, carries the highest fares from the US, with July, August and the Christmas/New Year window the most expensive. April, May, September and early October usually price far better with similar weather.
For a connecting long-haul itinerary, book two to four months ahead. Award seats and cheap economy buckets on the trans-Pacific leg are what sell out first — the Asia-to-Denpasar hop nearly always has availability.
Compare total elapsed time as well as price. A cheaper two-stop ticket can add ten hours and a second overnight, and self-transfers on separate tickets leave you carrying the risk if the first leg is late.
