Getting to Bali
There are no non-stop flights from the mainland US to Denpasar. Every itinerary connects, usually through Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Singapore, Doha or Dubai, putting Bali roughly 21-26 hours from the west coast and a little longer from the east. US passport holders normally enter Indonesia on a visa on arrival.

For travellers from USA
Entry rules, money and practical planning that apply specifically to American travellers.
Americans normally enter Indonesia on a visa on arrival, bought at Ngurah Rai airport or online in advance as an e-VOA. It is valid for 30 days and can usually be extended once for a further 30 days.
Your passport needs at least six months' validity from the arrival date, and Indonesia's electronic customs declaration is completed online shortly before or after landing.
Rules change with little warning. Check the current guidance on the US State Department's Indonesia page before booking anything non-refundable.
Bali is priced in Indonesian rupiah and the dollar goes a long way, especially on villas, drivers and spa treatments. Cards work across Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud and Nusa Dua, but warungs, markets and local drivers are cash-first.
Use ATMs attached to bank branches, decline the machine's own currency conversion, and travel with a card that has no foreign transaction fee.
Bali charges a tourist levy on arrival, payable online or at the airport, and most hotel quotes include the standard service and tax loading — villas sometimes quote before it.
Bali is UTC+8, which is 15-16 hours ahead of the US west coast. Plan a soft first day and book your airport transfer for the actual arrival time rather than assuming an afternoon check-in.
US health insurance rarely covers you properly in Indonesia, and medical evacuation is expensive. Buy comprehensive travel insurance, and read the scooter clause — most policies only cover riders with a valid motorcycle licence and helmet.
The dry season runs April to October. July, August and the year-end holidays are the busiest and priciest; April, May, September and early October are the best value.
