Staying In Ubud

Ubud sits inland in central Bali, roughly an hour and a half from the airport depending on traffic. It is the island's cultural and wellness base rather than a beach destination: days here are built around temples, markets, art galleries, rice-terrace walks, river valleys and yoga or spa time. Evenings are quieter than the coast, with restaurants rather than clubs, which is a large part of why travellers choose it.

Accommodation in Ubud skews towards low-rise resorts set into the valleys, pool-villa properties, boutique hotels and smaller guesthouses. Many properties are built along ridgelines or river gorges, so garden, jungle or valley outlooks are common, and private-pool rooms are far more widely available than in the beach areas. Larger international resort brands are mostly on the outskirts, while central Ubud is dominated by smaller, independently run stays.

Central Ubud Or The Outskirts?

Staying in central Ubud means you can walk to the market, the palace, the main restaurant streets and the Monkey Forest, which suits shorter stays and first-time visitors. The trade-off is traffic noise and less space. Outlying areas such as the valleys towards Payangan, Tegallalang, Sayan and Penestanan are greener and calmer, usually offer more room and better views for the money, but you will rely on hotel shuttles, scooters or drivers to get into town. If a rice-field or river setting is the priority, the outskirts are usually the better choice.

Ubud suits couples, honeymooners, solo travellers, wellness trips and anyone who wants a slower first or last few nights of a Bali holiday. Many travellers split their stay, pairing a few nights inland here with a few nights on the coast. It is less suited to travellers whose main reason for visiting Bali is beach or surf time.
