East Bali
A quiet north-east coast fishing area known for diving and Mount Agung views.
Amed is a string of small black-sand fishing bays on Bali's north-east coast, roughly three hours from the airport. It is a diving and freediving destination first: the USAT Liberty wreck at nearby Tulamben is one of the most accessible wreck dives in the world, and the house reefs are reachable from shore. Accommodation is small-scale, sunrise views over the Lombok Strait are excellent, and evenings are very quiet.

AttractionsOne of Bali's oldest and holiest temples, high in the Karangasem mountains. The split gate frames Mount Agung on a clear morning — go at sunrise to beat the photo queue, and bring a sarong as it is an active place of worship.
