Airport
Bali airport guide (Ngurah Rai / DPS)
What to expect on arrival at Denpasar, and how long it takes to reach the main tourist areas.
Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) sits between Kuta and Jimbaran, on the neck of the Bukit Peninsula. It handles all international arrivals to Bali, including direct services from several Australian cities.
Arrivals. After immigration and baggage claim you exit into a covered arrivals area where pre-booked drivers wait with name boards. Arrivals can be busy when several wide-bodies land together, so allow extra time on tight connections.
Getting to your hotel. Approximate driving times in normal traffic: Kuta and Jimbaran 15-30 minutes, Nusa Dua 20-35, Seminyak 25-45, Sanur 30-50, Canggu 45-75, Ubud 75-120. South Bali traffic is unpredictable and these times can extend significantly in the late afternoon.
Transfers. Pre-booking a private transfer avoids negotiating on arrival and is generally the easiest option after a red-eye from Australia.
Departures. Check-in for Australian services often opens around three hours before departure, and the terminal has a large airside retail and dining area after security.
