Bali travel costs from the United States

What actually drives the cost of a Bali trip from the United States, and where the savings are.

For US travelers, airfare dominates the budget. Once you are on the ground, most day-to-day spending in Bali is low compared with US prices, which is why longer trips often make better value than short ones.

Flights. There are no nonstop services between the US mainland and Bali, so itineraries route through an Asian or Middle Eastern hub — commonly Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha or Dubai. West Coast departures generally have the shortest total travel time and the widest choice of connections; East Coast and Midwest departures usually cost more and add hours. Fares rise around US summer vacation, Thanksgiving and the Christmas and New Year period.

Accommodation. Bali runs from simple guesthouses to five-star beachfront resorts and private-pool villas. Villas often work well for families or groups because you pay per villa rather than per room, and a mid-range US budget goes a long way here.

On the ground. Meals, drivers, spa treatments and most activities cost far less than their US equivalents. The exceptions are imported wine and spirits, beach clubs and the higher-end restaurants in Seminyak and Canggu.

Money and payment. The local currency is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR); US dollars are not used for everyday spending. Cards are accepted in hotels, larger restaurants and shops, but cash is needed for warungs, drivers, markets and parking. Check your card's foreign transaction fee before you leave — a no-FX-fee card is worth using — and expect a local ATM operator fee per withdrawal, so fewer, larger withdrawals cost less. If a terminal offers to charge you in US dollars, decline and pay in rupiah.

Extras worth budgeting for. Airport transfers, travel insurance with medical evacuation, an eSIM or local SIM, day tours, and any tourist levy or entry fee payable at the time of travel.
