Bali travel tips for UK travellers

Practical tips for travellers from the UK, from insurance and adapters to payment, water and local rules.

Travel insurance. The NHS does not cover you abroad and a GHIC is not valid in Indonesia, so a policy with emergency medical cover and repatriation is essential. Read the scooter and adventure-activity exclusions carefully — many UK policies void scooter claims without the correct licence and a helmet.

Plugs and power. Indonesia uses Type C/F sockets at 230V. UK three-pin plugs need an adapter, but the voltage is effectively the same, so no converter is required.

Money. Carry small rupiah notes for drivers, parking, markets and warungs, and always choose to be billed in rupiah rather than pounds at ATMs and card terminals.

Water. Drink bottled or filtered water and use it for brushing teeth. Most hotels and villas provide refill stations.

Food. Busy warungs with high turnover are generally a good sign. Ease into unfamiliar food over the first few days.

Sun. Bali is close to the equator and UV is far stronger than a UK summer, even on cloudy days.

Connectivity. UK roaming bundles rarely include Indonesia at a sensible rate. An eSIM arranged before departure is usually cheaper and avoids queueing on arrival.

Before you go. Read the FCDO's Indonesia travel advice — it also affects whether your insurance remains valid — and note the British Consulate in Bali's contact details.

Respect the rules. Indonesian law is strict, particularly on drugs, and penalties are severe. Dress and behave modestly at temples and religious sites.
