Getting to Bali

Flying To Bali From The UK

Denpasar is one stop from the UK, usually via Doha, Dubai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Istanbul, with total journey times of roughly 17-20 hours from London and slightly longer from regional airports. British passport holders normally enter Indonesia on a visa on arrival.

London Heathrow to Denpasar

London Gatwick to Denpasar

One stop via Istanbul, Doha or Dubai — often the cheapest London option.

Manchester to Denpasar

One stop via Doha, Dubai, Istanbul or Singapore; roughly 18-20h.

Birmingham to Denpasar

One stop via Doha, Dubai or Istanbul with same-day connections.

Edinburgh to Denpasar

One stop via Doha or Dubai; routing via London is usually slower, not cheaper.

Glasgow to Denpasar

One stop via Dubai or Doha, or connect through Manchester for more choice.

For travellers from the UK

Entry rules, money and practical planning that apply specifically to British travellers.

Entry Rules For British Passport Holders

British nationals normally enter Indonesia on a visa on arrival, paid at Ngurah Rai airport or bought online beforehand as an e-VOA. It runs for 30 days and can usually be extended once for a further 30.

Indonesia requires at least six months' passport validity from arrival, and airlines check it at the UK departure gate. The electronic customs declaration is completed online around landing.

Check the FCDO travel advice for Indonesia before booking anything non-refundable.

Budgeting In Sterling

Bali is priced in Indonesian rupiah and sterling goes a long way on villas, drivers and spa treatments. Cards are accepted across Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud and Nusa Dua; warungs, markets and drivers expect cash.

Use bank-branch ATMs rather than standalone machines, decline the machine's own conversion rate, and travel with a fee-free debit or travel card.

Bali charges a tourist levy on arrival, payable online or at the airport. Most hotel quotes include service and tax; some villa quotes do not.

Insurance, Scooters And Timing

The NHS does not cover you in Indonesia and there is no reciprocal agreement. Comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is essential.

Read the motorcycle clause: most UK policies only cover scooter injuries if you hold a full UK motorcycle entitlement plus an international driving permit, and wore a helmet.

Bali's dry season is April to October. UK school holidays in July and August plus the Christmas period are the peak; April, May, September and early October are the value windows.
